It’s summer, which means people are spending more time in the sun and doing whatever it takes to beat the heat. As summer temperatures rise, drinking water throughout the day is extremely important in ensuring that our bodies maintain energy and function efficiently.
While a glass of water is the best-known way to stay hydrated, there are plenty of alternative ways to keep your body healthy and hydrated all summer long.
- Eat Your Way To Hydration
Snacking on water-filled foods is a great way to have your water and eat it too! The Institute of Medicine recommends eating no more than 20 percent of your daily water intake. Sliced cucumbers, watermelon, bell peppers, and celery are great water-rich foods that can help your body stay hydrated.
- Hunger May Be Thirst In Disguise.
We’ve all heard the phrase, “drink a glass of water before your meal” because thirst can often disguise itself as hunger. Before you take your first bite, drink a glass of water, wait 10 minutes, and reevaluate your hunger. If you’re still hungry, feel free to dive into one of your water-filled snacks!
- Drink it Down – And It Doesn’t Have To Be Just Water!
Coffee, tea, coconut water, and fat-free milk are additional liquids that can contribute to your daily hydration needs.
- Do Your Research
Everyone’s body is different and requires different amounts of fluids to stay healthy and hydrated throughout the day. For example, the elderly have an increased need for water due to a decreased ability to detect thirst. Additionally, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is recommended that women consume an additional liter per day compared to men. Overall, it’s important to know your body and to not rely on a “one size fits all” mentality when it comes to your body’s hydration.
- Revamp Your H20
For those of you bored with your standard H2O, there are a number of ways to revamp your water to give it an extra kick. Infusing water with fruit and herbs such as lemon, lime or mint are great ways to keep that water flowing without the lack of flavor. Another trick is to add coconut water ice cubes to your water to give it a nutty, slightly sweet taste.
- Water Is A Cocktail’s Best Friend
For those of you who may be indulging in a cocktail (or two), be sure to drink a glass of water after each drink. Alcohol is a proven dehydrator so pairing your drink with water will help eliminate dehydration and its not so fun side effects.
- Invest In A Reusable Water Bottle
Purchasing a reusable water bottle makes drinking water or other hydrating fluids easy and convenient. Take it with you wherever you may be whether you are in the office, at the store, or exercising with friends.
- Put Reminders Into Your Phone or Calendar
While this may seem silly, adding reminders into your phone or calendar to drink at regular intervals will help drinking water become a habit. After a few weeks, drinking water will be a part of your daily routine, no reminder necessary.
- Replenish What You Expend
Keep in mind how often you use the restroom or break a sweat. It’s important to replenish your body of all the fluids you expend to maintain hydration. Heart.org recommends for every pound of sweat you lose, that’s a pint of water you’ll need to replenish.
- Finally, Don’t Wait Until You’re Thirsty To Drink
The moment you become thirsty is the moment you are already dehydrated. Dehydration can have serious implications from headaches to life-threatening illnesses such as heat stroke. It’s important to remain proactive whether it’s eating water-filled foods, drinking hydrating liquids or sipping on water throughout the day.
