Can you believe it? Summer is finally here! For kids, they can barely contain their excitement. For parents, the stress levels may increase. Summer is great time for kids to enjoy the outdoors, hang out with friends, and stay moving!
Unfortunately, kids tend to spend endless hours in the summer in front of the tv, playing video games, or staying up late watching movies. According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, kids need at least an hour of physical activity a day. So, why not get creative and make it a family affair? Below are some great ideas to get up and get moving with your kids this summer!
1. Go on Family Walks
Had a long day at work? Been stuck inside all day? After dinner, take a family walk around the neighborhood. Challenge your kids in a race…just don’t let them beat you!
2. Take a Dip in the Pool
The scorching summer heat is a perfect excuse to get outside and dive into the swimming pool. Not much of a swimmer? Try jogging, jumping jacks, kicks, dancing or any kind movement in the water to get your body moving!
3. Go on A Bike Ride
Tired of the same old bike rides? Change trails around your neighborhood to explore! Or even better, make a game out of the trails! Set up a scavenger hunt to challenge and allow your kids to explore!
4. Enforce TV Limits
Instead of letting your kids spend hours in front of the tv, set up TV limits. By limiting their tv time, you are creating more opportunities for them to get up and moving!
Just the word “run” make you feel out of breath and tense? Don’t worry, have fun with it! Summer is filled with family fun races, 5ks, and fun Color Runs. Check your local paper or online. Some examples could be: marathonguide.com, runningintheusa.com, etc. Look for upcoming races or find a cause that’s close to your heart and run in support of it. Is your family super competitive like mine? Train as a family prior race day and see who can improve their time the most!
6. Day at the Park
Pack a healthy lunch and spend the afternoon at the park. Not only are you having fun outdoors, but you are promoting a healthy lifestyle to your children. Teach your kids good habits when they’re young by showing them what a proper diet consists of. Make it fun by throwing it all in a picnic basket and spending the day at their favorite park.
7. Workout Together
One of those days where you don’t feel like going outside? Log in to your www.livestreamingfitness.com account and do a workout class together! Want to break a sweat? Try Shelby’s Sass Class. Want to feel relaxed? Try Nicole’s Hip Hop Hatha or Rock the Mat Yoga class!
8. Create Obstacle Courses
Big yard with lots of open space or have a park nearby? Incorporate an obstacle course to get your kids moving. Set out hula-hoops, jump ropes, and a series of exercises to complete. Have fun and encourage a sweet friendly competition!
No matter what activities you choose to do with your family, remember it’s all about being active and having fun! Not only is it good for your health and theirs, but it is also a great time to bond with your family and create lasting memories!
